Enthralling for Dollars

Category : Fiction (Supernatural Mystery)

Length: 37 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

Nancy suspected her husband Jim was cheating on her.  Changes in her health had changed the dynamics in their marriage, leaving Nancy to wonder if her husband’s meetings with a personal trainer were more focused on the personal aspect and less on the training. Needing to know the truth, Nancy hired Private Investigator Peter Blaylock to find out what her husband was up to. What Peter discovered unmoored his perception of reality.

I continued to watch as I mentally reviewed the possibilities – and there weren’t many. Jim slid off the bed and put his clothes back on. He tossed the robe into the hamper before exiting the room.

I stopped recording before scrambling out of the car to catch his exit. I hid at the corner, waiting for him to appear. I didn’t care if anyone saw me lurking there or not. Part of me wondered what they did after that… whatever that was. Did they sit down and chat over coffee? Maybe discuss how their day went?

Jim was heading down the steps shortly after I reached the corner. I glanced at the porch to see the redhead in the doorway waving goodbye. Jim turned back, still smiling, and waved in return.

What the hell did I just see in that room?

The Mage, The Monster, and the Missing Maidens

Category : Fiction (Sword and Sorcery)

Length: 51 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

A mixture of happiness over his new sword and disgust over haggling with the merchant clouded his thoughts and emotions as he trudged up the steps to his room. Surely Rebekah would be awake by now – probably awake, hungry, and impatient. He turned the key in the lock, pushed open the door, and stepped into the room.

Rebekah was not there.

“How can this be?” he thought. He slowly looked around the room to make sure he hadn’t missed her. He even lifted the blanket on the bed to make sure she wasn’t hiding under it. She was simply not there.

His next thought was of the treasure; maybe she had run away with both of their shares. Bending down, he saw both bundles were still stowed under the bed. He glanced at the window – the drop bar on the shutters was down. There was no way she could have gone out the window. And he was sure he had locked the door when he left – he distinctly remembered the click of the mechanism when he unlocked the door moments ago.

“This is not possible,” he reasoned.

Don't Call Me Misty

Category : Fiction (Science Fiction Mystery)

Length: 31 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

In the not-too-distant future, a private investigator and his non-corporeal partner are confronted by danger stemming from the traumatic event that transformed their lives in an unimaginable way. Will this surprise confrontation spell doom for our hero – or will he live to investigate another day?

The passenger sitting next to me was quiet. Then again, she’s always quiet because she lacks the anatomy necessary to vocalize. I turned my gaze away from the forward portal to look at her. She was getting much better at manifesting the form and image of a woman. She was still working on generating color – in this instance she looked like a tinted, time-worn photograph. Color aside, her face was well defined, hair flowed down around her shoulders, and her body appeared to be covered in a tight-fitting body suit.

I resisted a sudden urge to reach out to her because I knew my hand would pass through her body. She was a sentient being composed of mist, mist that she could shape into any form she imagined. She hadn’t always been a creature of mist – she was a flesh-and-blood woman before the “accident.” Her name back then was Shannon, but these days I call her “Misty.” She hated that name.

A Trickle of Doubt

Category : Fiction (Supernatural Mystery)

Length: 59 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

“I need you to kill my husband.”

I tried not to react. At least I understood why the other men in the pub had given her such odd reactions. “Why do you need to kill your husband and why do you think I would be willing to do such a thing?”

“Why?” She moved closer to me, pulling her turtleneck down to expose her neck. “Look closely.”

I looked. She had a lovely neck, but it was marred by small round marks. Some of the marks looked red and angry, others looked old and dark. While my face was so close to hers, I took the liberty to steal a sniff.  Her perfume – or maybe it was her shampoo – smelled wonderful. It was like walking through a garden of flowers.

“What am I looking at?”

“Bite marks. My husband is a vampire.”

Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

A Slice of Evil

Category : Fiction (Urban Fantasy)

Length: 44 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

The raucous noise of the gang increased in volume as the group passed by the mouth of the alley. Paul remained completely still until the sound slowly decreased to the point where he knew they were well past him. He took a deep breath of fetid air before peaking around the dumpster. The sidewalk was empty.  He started out of the alley, but something caught the corner of his vision.

The dumpster lid was closed but sticking out of the front was something that looked like a handle. Paul approached cautiously. He tried to identify what the handle was attached to, but the rest of it was hidden under the dumpster lid. He took the risk to grab the handle. Strangely, whatever it was, it felt natural in his hand – it felt right somehow.

He pulled on the object. He jumped when it screeched against the metal of the lid. His heart pounded in fear that the noise would alert the gang.  He waited for what seemed like minutes, but was probably only seconds, before concluding the noise had not revealed his presence. Not wanting to repeat his mistake, he lifted the lid of the dumpster and slowly pulled the object out.

It was a sword.

Shadows,  Secrets, and Swords

Category : Fiction (Sword and Sorcery)

Length: 73 pages (approximate - depends on screen size)

  Synopsis

Falcon had seen many odd things during his life as a warrior and mercenary, but none of those compared to the strange experiences that began in a quiet port city and continued in a quest for treasure.

A robed form slowly emerged from the shadows. The moonlight did not penetrate the folds of the hood and the flowing robe obscured the shape of the body. However, the voice emanating from the hood clearly identified the figure as a woman.

“Fear me not, sir. I need your help.”

“Step closer, woman. I don’t discuss matters with shadows.”

The woman stepped further into the moonlight and pushed back her hood. Raven-hued hair cascaded around a lovely face before flowing into the folds of her robe. Her blue eyes gleamed in the faint light as her full lips formed words.

“Is this better?” she asked.

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, or if you know someone who has, this book offers insights and knowledge gained from both research and real-life experiences. The journey may not be the same as yours (or the person with the diagnosis), but you should walk away after reading this with more information than you started with.
